Todd Bodine Enjoys 'Spectacular' Bobsled Challenge
Monday, 05 January 2009 12:24

The Whelen Geoff Bodine Bobsled Challenge was held at the Olympic Sports Complex in Lake Placid, NY over the past three days. The event featured both NASCAR and NHRA drivers.

Todd Bodine won the first race of the 2009 bobsled challenge held on Sunday.

Winning all but one of the six events since the challenge began, Boris Said has been able to hold his spot as the king of the hill. With a time of 49.83 seconds in the first round and 49.35 seconds in the second, Bodine took Said's place on the top of the mountain.

"First, we've got to keep in mind what it's for. It's a great cause," a jubilant Todd Bodine said. "You get a bunch of racers together, and the one thing they all want to do is win. So to come out of here with a win, I'm tickled. It's the first time. Boris has been the king, and I finally got to dethrone him."

In only his second year competing in the bobsled challenge, Joey Logano tied Larry Gunselman in the second position with a total time of 1:39.6.

Said took the sixth position in the first race.

The second race featured a four round elimination tournament. NASCAR and NHRA drivers were seperated into their own divisions.

Bodine and NHRA driver Morgan Lucas made it through to the finals, making for a wild finish.

The finalists were equipped with competition Bo-Dyn sleds used by the USA National Bobsled team. Bodine was paired with USA Men's Coach Brian Shimer, while Lucas was accompanied by USA Women's Coach Bill Tavares.

With a time of 47.78 seconds, Lucas finished nearly two seconds faster than his semi-final efforts. Gaining on Lucas' time through every stage, Bodine's hopes turned upside down coming out of Turn 18 giving Lucas the title.

“I felt bad about wrecking the sled, but I had this old-time racer tell me once, ‘boy, if you can’t win, be spectacular,’ and we were spectacular,” said Bodine.

Funds raised by the challenge go directly to the Bo-Dyn Boblsed Project. The event will be televised for four hours on January 18 at 12pm and on January 25 at 2pm on SPEED.
