In an ever-developing story, it now appears Elliott Sadler will be back behind the wheel of the No. 19 Dodge for Gillett Evernham Motorsports (GEM) in 2009. Sources close to the situation confirmed Friday that the Emporia, Virginia-native and GEM have reached an agreement to put Sadler back in the car.
The team announced late last month they would be replacing Sadler with third-year driver A.J. Allmendinger. Sadler and the team had signed a contract extension in 2008, but the team was willing to buy out the remainder of his contract as part of the deal. Unhappy with the entire situation, Sadler and his attorney - John Buric - filed a breach of contract suit against GEM.
Now, it appears GEM has backpedaled on their decision and has agreed to reinstate Sadler as the driver of the No. 19 Dodge. Rejoining the team, Sadler has reportedly agreed to drop the breach of contract lawsuit.
Where this leaves Allmendinger is still up in the air. According to Thursday's announcement concerning the merger of GEM and Petty Holdings, the new organization will run a fourth car on a limited schedule. Allmendinger now appears to be back in the part-time role with the team's No. 10 Dodge. Sources close to the situation have indicated if additional sponsorship is found for the fourth car, more races will be attempted.
