Dover International Speedway Pit Road Receiving Makeover
Tuesday, 13 January 2009 08:24

One of the most unique and treacherous pit roads in all of NASCAR is finally joining the modern era. The third phase of Dover International Speedway's "Monster Makeover" is now tackling the much out-dated pit road. Crews are currently in the process of widening the pit lane, installing a SAFER barrier and adding one additional pit stall.

For years, Dover has caught flack from drivers and media members alike for having one of the most antiquated pit roads in the sport. A narrow pit lane enclosed by a guard rail and concrete barrier made it nearly impossible for drivers to exit their pit stall with someone to their outside. Teams were forced into cramped quarters and with only 42 stalls and each time the Sprint Cup Series rolled into town, two teams had to share a stall until another opened up.

"This project is another example of our commitment to making capital improvements to the facility to create an 'all-new Dover,'" Denis McGlynn, president and CEO of Dover Motorsports, Inc explained. "The first two phases of Monster Makeover construction focused on adding new amenities for fans of the Monster Mile. This year we'll make modifications to the areas that directly impact the competition, by widening pit road, and creating a safer environment for the crews who are battling in the trenches on race day."

Crews began work on the new pit road in the middle of December, removing the 1160 ft. inside wall that separated the pits from the track itself. The new SAFER barrier will be 1592 ft. long and extend into Turn 4. By extending the wall, crews were able to create the additional 43rd pit stall, eliminating the need to share a stall. Grass on the frontstretch and in Turn 4 has been removed to accommodate the additional space.

This pit road construction is the third part of a multi-year, multi-million dollar investment to improve the Dover International Speedway. A favorite of drivers and fans alike, the "Monster Makeover" continues to solidify Dover as one of the top-notch facilities on the circuit. The first phase of the "Monster Makeover" in 2007 saw a new skybox complex and an expansion of the Infield Media Center. Last year, the speedway debuted it's most unique feature by far. Located in the new Victory Plaza, presented by AAA, the 46-foot-tall Miles the Monster statue looms over all that pass by it. Other improvements included in the second phase of the project included a new main entrance for fans, expansion of the FanZone display area and a new emergency services building.

Any fan looking to see a great NASCAR event should check out the Dover International Speedway. High-banks and fast speeds produce some of the best racing NASCAR has to offer. The series returns to the Monster Mile May 29-31 and then again on September 25-27. For more information or to purchase your tickets today, call 800-441-RACE, or visit www.DoverSpeedway.com.
