13 Proves Unlucky For Gordon
Saturday, 17 January 2009 09:31

Stage 13 of the Dakar Rally was altered due to excessive rain in the region, making areas of the stage impassable. The stage was abbriviated from 545 km to 220 km, and began at CP4.

Robby Gordon looked to be on the rise to his first stage victory early on when he passed Giniel De Villiers and Mark Miller for the lead, until a problem with the throttle forced Gordon to pull over. Gordon was able to locate the problem, and found it was a small rock that caused the issue. Able to continue, Gordon managed to collect a 16th place finish. Gordon holds his place at third in the overall standings.

"Obviously, I wish that the No. 309 Monster Energy Toyo Tires Hummer would have had a better outcome today," stated Gordon. "Regardless of a pesky little rock getting in our way, I am still happy with where we stand going into the last stage tomorrow. Even though we haven't won any specials yet this year, we are still here competing for the Dakar Rally title and that is what that matters. This race is about survival and preparation, and Team Dakar USA has excelled at both. We have been able to address the problems, fix them, and continue forward. Both cars are still in the race, and I couldn't be more proud of the Team Dakar USA program."

Eric Vigouroux is continuing his climb up the overall standings, after navigating his No. 324 Vanguard Hummer to a sixth place finish in the 13th stage. With the driver's highest finish in the event as of yet, he has jolted up to 14th in the overall standings and hopes to secure the first time that Team Dakar USA has placed both drivers in the top-15.

"The No. 324 Vanguard Hummer had a great day," Gordon said. "I want to congratulate Eric [Vigouroux] on his top-10 finish today. He did what we needed him to do today, and I am proud that he is my teammate. I am even more proud that the Vanguard Hummer is in the top-15. It speaks volumes to the program that we have in place."

The final stage of the Dakar Rally will run today, and Robby Gordon hopes to attain his highest overall finish in the event in the rally in five attempts.
