"The Butt Against The Gut"
Monday, 26 January 2009 10:42

On Friday night Arena Racing USA witnessed one of their best nights to date when Joe Gibbs took the wheel of one of the half-scale cars, according to the Newport News, Virginia Daily Press.

With 3,500 fans surrounding the 1/10 mile track (more than three times the usual crowd), Gibbs and his close friend Norm Miller, Interstate Batteries chariman, put on a show that many won't forget. Heading into turn four Gibbs took the low side to pass Miller, coming out of the turn Gibbs clipped the right rear of Miller's car sending him flipping into the wall.

Due to the wreck the race was cut short, 14 laps short to be exact. The trophy was awarded to Gibbs, but he then turned the prize over to Miller. Scheduled to run 20, Gibbs' and Miller's incident ended it on the sixth.

"No excuses, I was out of control. I blame it on Norm," Gibbs joked to the Daily Press.

"He was running better than me and probably would've passed me," Miller told the Daily Press. "When he hit me, I saw the wall coming, but the helmet and the safety equipment worked fine."

Prior to the race, Gibbs was given one of the orange and black Home Depot uniforms that former driver Tony Stewart wore in 2008. With his incapability to fit into the uniform, Gibbs and Miller engaged in some pre-race banter.

"They gave me Tony's uniform, and I've accused Tony of being a little overweight," Gibbs stated. "I got that thing on, and I'll be honest with you, I've got this much room left (about a 4-inch gap at the waist) and five people trying to zip it up."

Entailing that Miller's gut size may pose a problem for getting into the Interstate Batteries uniform that resembles the one wore by Gibbs driver Kyle Busch.

"I was worried about the 'Slosh Effect,' " Miller said. "I was thinking that my gut might give me an advantage, a low center of gravity.

Miller continued to joke, "But then I thought: What about Joe's butt? So it will be 'The Butt against the Gut.'"

The butt came out on top, exiting the arena Miller quipped, "I might have to cut my sponsorship in half."
