The third annual Legends Helping Legends of Racing Fundraiser this year will honor one of the sport's greatest crew chiefs, Jake Elder. One of the greatest events put together, the annual fundraising effort at the Memory Lane Motorsports & Automotive Museum in Mooresville, N.C. is a great way to connect fans of today with the heroes of yesterday, all while raising money for a great cause.
This year's event, scheduled for Saturday March 14th from 10am-4pm, will raise money for Elder's ever-rising medical costs. "Suitcase" Jake Elder, as he is known, is now bed ridden at the Autumn Care Assisted Living Center in Statesville, N.C.
A legendary crew chief during the 1960s, 70s and 80s, "Suitcase" Jake Elder worked with some of the sport's greatest teams and drivers. Earning three championships in his career, two with David Pearson and his final with Dale Earnhardt in 1980, Elder set the bar high for his fellow competitors and those that followed in his footsteps. With no retirement fund or benefits packages in place for those countless men and women that helped build the sport to what it is today, covering medical costs have become more and more difficult for some of racing's biggest names. Instead of receiving any assistance from NASCAR itself, those struggling to keep up with the rising cost of living have found a blessing in their fellow competitors and the fans. For just $10.00 fans attending this event will get a tour of one of the greatest collections of automobiles and race cars in Race Country U.S.A., have the chance to meet some of NASCAR's biggest names from years past - including drivers, crew chiefs and mechanics, all while raising money for Elder and his family. If you can not attend the event and would like to make a donation to Jake send a check to his sister Helen Moore who is his guardian and specify Jake Elder Fund on the check. Send to Memory Lane Museum 769 River Hwy, Mooresville, NC 28117. Throughout the day, fans will also be able to take advantage of events such 50/50 Raffle, drawings for door prizes, a vintage car show. In addition to that days events, a special motorcycle ride from Tilley Harley-Davidson ,1226 Morland Drive in Statesville to Memory Lane will be held in conjunction with the Legends Helping Legends Fundraiser. Registration will start at 9AM and will leave for the museum at 10am police escorted.
