Sitting outside of the top-35 in owner points, Regan Smith is counting on Furniture Row Racing's past success at superspeedways to get him in the Daytona 500.
With 18 drivers battling for eight starting positions in the event, the 2008 Raybestos Rookie of the Year in the Sprint Cup Series is losing sleep to the task he has ahead of him. "I don't care how we get into the big show, just so we get in," noted Smith. "There's a lot pressure to make the biggest race of the year. But the good news is that the Furniture Row Chevy Impala SS is powered by Hendrick engines and the team has a strong history at superspeedways. When I wake up at night, I think of our positives and then go back to sleep."
Last year the No. 78 Furniture Row team attained the third highest starting position for the Daytona 500. In addition to their Daytona efforts, the No. 78 team started on the pole in the Talladega event in April, began the summer event at Daytona in fourth and qualified seventh in Talladega's fall event. "We always feel upbeat about our superspeedway program and our Hendrick engines," said Jay Guy, crew chief of the No. 78 Chevrolet. "But without preseason testing at Daytona and not seeing what the competition has, you just don't know." The success of Furniture Row Racing added to Smith's top-10 qualifying efforts in the final two superspeedway events in 2008 has Smith confident about his chances of getting into the big race on February 15. "The Daytona 500 qualifying system can be confusing, but we know that if we can be in the top three among the go-or-go-home teams on Pole Day, we'll be locked in," Smith stated. "I think we have a good shot at that -- it would be a huge load off our shoulders. But if we don't get in on Pole Day, we still have the (Gatorade) race."
