One More Chance
Monday, 09 February 2009 09:43

Facing a rude awakening in the Budweiser Shootout, the 2009 Rookie contenders Joey Logano and Scott Speed will get more race time when the drivers hit the track once more in the Gatorade Duels on Thursday.

Neither of the two were able to lock themselves on the front row for the Daytona 500, so a wreck within five laps can't happen on Thursday. Speed remains confident that he has no worrys about getting into the big race.

"I’m very glad I can have the Duels, more practice time racing before the 500," stated Speed. "There’s a lot that goes on out there. It’s a lot more difficult than it looks. I think we had to work on our car to get it to draft a little bit better but I have all the confidence in the world that by the time it comes to the 500 we’ll be good.”

For Logano, he feels that more time spent racing is the key.

“Preparing myself is the biggest deal right now and not getting a lot of laps in the Shootout didn’t help any last night," said Logano. "It is what it is. We’ve got to put it behind us and focus on the 500 now.”

With the Duels the rookies last chance to qualify for the Daytona 500, they will need to keep their cars out on the track for the full event.

“My strategy is not to crash and to spin it [smiles]," Speed stated. "And so far that’s proven to be harder than it looks.”

“I was in that Shootout practice the other night." Logano continued, "That was a rude awakening I’d say with these cars. They are a handful out there. Just get out there and gain some more respect from these guys. I didn’t really get to do much the other night so kinda just keep getting a feel for it. Same thing I’ve been doing.”
