In the first drafting practice of the week, it was three Dodges that topped the chars in the fifty-five minute session. Richard Petty Motorsports' Kasey Kahne put his No. 9 Budweiser Dodge atop the charts with a fast lap of 47.122 seconds at a speed of 190.994 mph. Teammates Kurt Busch and Same Hornish Jr. was second and third on the speed charts in their Penske Racing Dodges.
For the fifty-four cars that hit the track for the practice session, speeds were not the concern. The most important thing during the fifty-five minute session was getting a feel for their car and the competition in the draft. Unlike the previous qualifying practice sessions earlier this week, teams made longer runs working on getting ready for Thursday's Gatorade Duel 150s. Three-time Daytona 500 champion Jeff Gordon ran the most laps of the session running a total of thirty-one.
Rookie Joey Logano's rough welcome to the Daytona International Speedway continued Wednesday in practice. The 18-year-old bobbled in Turn 4 and slid up into the outside wall. With scrapes all down the right side of the No. 20 Home Depot Toyota, the team went to work making repairs while Logano could do nothing but stand and watch. The team was unable to finish repairs by the end of the session, and Logano lost out on the thing he needs most - track time.
A number of teams were concerned about the amount of tire wear they were seeing after running a number of laps. Robby Gordon blistered a tire after running a total of fourteen laps and Dale Earnhardt Jr. explained the way his tires wore was a definite concern. "I got to get my car turning so I don't beat on my right front so much," Earnhardt Jr. told HardcoreRaceFans.com. "I was way too tight. I knew I was going to tear the tire up, but I just didn't want to come in, I was having too much fun. I don't know if I'm the only one, I had a pretty tight car. I don't think anyone else was as tight as I was." Third-fastest qualifier Ryan Newman blew an engine in his No. 39 U.S. Army Chevrolet. Newman was only able to run a total of seven laps before the motor gave out. "Something broke in the engine," Newman explained. "I'm not really sure what. Obviously the horsepower has been great in qualifying and it felt strong out there, but I was just coming up through the gears and getting up to speed and something let go. It's unfortunate. But these guys have got another bullet so they can bolt in there and we'll be good to go." The Cup cars will be back on the track at 2pm E.T for the final practice session before Thursday's Gatorade Duels. The fifty minute session is sure to feature large packs of cars, with drivers trying to get their cars handling right and acclimated to running well in the draft.
