In Wednesday's first practice session, Ryan Newman's engine in the No. 39 U.S. Army Chevrolet was crippled due to an engine malfunction. The team replaced the engine for the days second practice. Under NASCAR's rules Ryan Newman will start in the rear of the pack on Thursday's Gatorade Duel 150 qualifying event.
Originally set to start on the outside pole, Newman will need to overcome this obstacle if he wants to further his chances of defending his 2008 Daytona 500 victory. "Something broke in the engine," said Newman. "I'm not really sure what. Obviously the horsepower has been great in qualifying and it felt strong out there. I was just coming up through the gears and getting up to speed and something let go. It's unfortunate. But these guys have another bullet they can bolt in and we'll be good to go."
