Friday Cup Practice Not Without Its Action
Friday, 13 February 2009 16:08

The Sprint Cup cars hit the track Friday for a practice session in which most drivers were looking to just fine-tune their rides and bring them back in one piece.

Budweiser Shootout runner-up Jamie McMurray ran the fastest lap of the session, posting a lap of 46.986 seconds at a speed of 191.546 mph. After being involved in a practice wreck with Michael Waltrip on Wednesday, McMurray was forced to pull out the back-up car for the 500. Luckily for the driver of the No. 26, the back-up was the car used in the Shootout. Not risking another incident, McMurray ran a total of only 17 laps before parking his ride for the session.

Robby Gordon posted the second-fastest lap of the session after running only four laps in his No. 7 Jim Beam Toyota. The independent owner/driver ran a fast lap of 47.016 seconds at a speed of 191.424 mph. Paul Menard, AJ Allmendinger and Greg Biffle rounded out the top-5.

Trying to help out his rookie teammate, Kyle Busch climbed behind the wheel of the No. 20 Home Depot Toyota for the majority of Friday's practice session, with Logano atop the team's hauler watching and learning.

Towards the end of the hour-long session, Budweiser Shootout winner Kevin Harvick made contact with the outside wall in Turn 4. Coming up on a pack of cars, Harvick's No. 29 Shell/Pennzoil Chevrolet drifted up the track and into the wall, damaging the right side.  What appeared to be only body damage turned out to be much worse, as the team was forced to go to pull out their back-up cars.

Six cars opted to sit out Friday's practice session, ensuring they would avoid trouble. Denny Hamlin, Jeremy Mayfield, Scott Riggs, Regan Smith and Aric Almirola did not hit the track. While the No. 18 M&M's Toyota stayed in the garage, as noted above, Busch took laps in the No. 20 car during the session.

The Cup cars are done for the day in terms of on-track action, but teams are hard at work fine-tuning their rides and making repairs. Many teams changed engines prior to Friday's practice, however others are busy making that switch now. Unlike any other weekend, NASCAR allows teams to change one engine between Thursday's Gatorade Duel races and Sunday's race.

Final practice for the Cup cars is scheduled for 10:30am E.T. Saturday morning. The hour and twenty-five minute session will be the final time the drivers will be able to hit the track before taking the green flag during Sunday's Daytona 500.
