Jeff Gordon Foundation Celebrates Ten Years
Saturday, 14 February 2009 09:32

Jeff Gordon has not only committed himself to winning on the track, but also winning the battle against pediatric cancer and other critical illnesses facing children. Celebrating A Decade of Caring  of The Jeff Gordon Foundation, Gordon is kicking off his tenth year by launching the TEN Match Campaign.

Since its formation in 1999, The Jeff Gordon Foundation have helped improve the lives of children that are facing critical illnesses. Raising seven million dollars in ten years, Gordon has brought relief and support to numerous families through the foundation and the Jeff Gordon Children's Hospital located in Concord, N.C. through various events including charitable dinners and an annual event held at Victory Lane Indoor Karting in Charlotte, N.C.

Now in their tenth year, the Foundation is focusing their effort on combating pediatric cancer, the number one disease killer of children. In an attempt to make it easier for people to donate in tough economic times, Gordon has implemented the TEN Match Campaign. This new campaign allows fans the opportunity to donate as little as $10 to the Foundation. Each donation of $10 or more will be personally matched by Jeff Gordon, up to $250,000.

"This is a way for us to directly get fans involved - and it's the first time we've ever done this. We've never really asked for the fans, or anyone outside our programs to play a part in giving back. This is a way - especially with the economy - you can give ten dollars, certainly you can give more than that if you wish, but I'm going to match it, whatever it is."

Tough economic conditions have not only made giving more difficult, but it has also taken its toll on those families trying to deal with pediatric illnesses. Health care costs are continually on the rise, while availability of that care is getting more and more difficult to attain. Gordon and his team understands the difficulties these families face not only dealing with their child's illness, but also the costs associated with doing so.

"We do grants every year at the end of the year.," Gordon explained. "There are a certain number of those grants we give right to a family to help them, whether it be housing for them while their child is at the hospital, maybe it's another room. Whatever it takes to make sure that that family - because a lot of times they are a long way from home - we will commit a certain amount to help out with that."

Kicking off the campaign, Jim Hunter, Vice President of NASCAR Corporate Communications, presented the four-time Cup Series champion with a check for $24,000 on behalf of The NASCAR Foundation.

"Jeff Gordon was one of the first NASCAR drivers to start a Foundation, and his focus has always been on helping children," Betty Jane France, NASCAR Foundation Chairperson, added. "He is not only a champion driver, but also a champion for charitable causes. The NASCAR Foundation is proud to make a $24,000 donation to The Jeff Gordon Foundation."
