As if Ryan Newman's week could not get any worse, the team will be forced to their second back-up car after blowing a right rear tire during Saturday's final practice.
Running under Michael Waltrip and ahead of teammate/owner Tony Stewart, Newman drove through Turn 1 and 2 early in the session only to have his No. 39 U.S. Army Chevrolet break loose and spin around. Tucked up behind his team car, Stewart had nowhere to go but in the door of the No. 39, ruining both cars.
The culprit of the incident was a blown right rear tire. An outspoken critic of Goodyear in the past, Stewart once again expressed his frustration with the exclusive tire provider after tearing up two of his race cars. "Just Goodyear right rear tire," a frustrated Steart explained. "Same thing everybody's been talking about all week. Same thing we talk about every year, the failures that Goodyear has. I think that's part of their marketing campaign, the more we talk about it the more press they get. I think they forget that it's supposed to be in a good way and not in a bad way." The team was forced to switch to his back-up car, the ride he drove to a third-place finish in last Saturday's Budweiser Shootout. While the car was extremely racy in that event, the race conditions will be extremely different for tomorrow's Daytona 500.
"We haven't really had any time on it except when it was really cold and in the dark," Stewart added. "We'll see." For Newman, it must seem the racing gods are angry with him. After posting a fast-lap in qualifying putting him on the outside row of his Gatorade Duel 150, the team blew an engine during Wednesday's practice. Forced to the rear of the field for his Duel, Newman made his way through the field only to be turned into the outside wall by David Reutimann. The defending Daytona 500 champion will be forced to his second back-up car of the week going into Sunday's race. A number of teams have complained about tire wear over the week and there were a number of issues in Thursday's second Gatorade Duel 150. This failure took out two strong cars and ensured Goodyear will be the talk of the garage for the remainder of the weekend.
