Opening practice for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is in the books and three-time defending Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson is atop the leader board. The driver of the No. 48 Lowe's Chevrolet ran a total of seven laps and took the top spot with a lap of 39.58 seconds at a speed of 181.892 mph.
In twelve starts at the Auto Club Speedway, Johnson has completed every lap on the 2-mile D-shaped oval and has three wins, eight top-5s and eight top-10s. Johnson swept the pole position during last year's events, was runner-up in this race and dominated the event in August.
Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon ran a total of twenty-two laps and posted the second-fastest lap of the session. The driver of the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet's fastest lap of the session was 39.81 seconds at a speed of 180.873 mph. Roush Fenway Racing's Greg Biffle was third fastest, while David Reutimann and Ryan Newman rounded out the top-5. Defending race winner Carl Edwards was tenth-fastest in the session.
