On Friday Yates Racing and David Gilliland concluded their relationship due to a shortage of sponsorship for the No. 38 Cup car.
Gilliland began driving for Yates Racing in mid-2006, and caught the eye of many in 2008 by collecting impressive results without guaranteed sponsorship for the entire season. Over the course of his two full seasons with the organization, Gilliland amassed a total of two top-5 and four top-10 finishes. Despite the split, Gilliland and Yates Racing both extend their best wishes to each other in the future.
"David did a great job for us and is a gifted driver," said Doug Yates. "We are sorry to lose him but it is important for David to continue driving, and sponsorship is very tough this year." "The folks at Yates Racing treated me very fairly and I appreciate that," said Gilliland. "Yates is a great organization and I am sorry to leave. But I need to move on and pursue other opportunities for my Sprint Cup career."
