Vickers Forced To Back-Up Car
Saturday, 21 February 2009 17:51

After narrowly beating former teammate Jimmie Johnson for the pole, Red Bull Racing's Brian Vickers will be forced to the back of the pack for Sunday's Auto Club 500. The team discovered an issue with the motor after qualifying and was forced to change engines.

"Pit selection is very important, and we'll be alright there," Vickers said. "But it's a shame we'll be starting from the back. Having all of that traffic in front of us will be a challenge, but I know we're all up for it. We have 500 miles to get up there and fight for the win."

Fellow Toyota driver Michael Waltrip also lost an engine and was forced to a back-up car. Crew chief Robert 'Bootie' Barker indicated Waltrip's issue was similar to the problems found under the hood of Vickers' No. 84 Red Bull Toyota. Both teams get engines from Toyota Racing Development.

As the cars hit the track for final practice on Saturday afternoon, Richard Petty Motorsport's Reed Sorenson slammed the outside wall in Turn 4. The No. 43 Dodge simply did not turn as Sorenson attempted to drive out of the corner. The car made heavy contact with the outside wall and limped back to the garage as the team went to work pulling out the back-up car.

"Something broke on the right front," Sorenson said looking at his wrecked race car. "I don't believe it was a tire, it went right too fast for it to be a tire, so I think something broke on the right front - I know the tie rod was broke off of it. That was a pretty hard hit."
