With many saying that he has taken too much on at one time, Tony Stewart has proved the doubters wrong in the past two races. With two eighth place results in the same number of weeks to begin the season, Stewart looks to be in great shape to continuing his winning tradition with his newly formed team.
Leading one time for three laps, Stewart placed himself in contention for a win in Sunday's Auto Club 500 at Auto Club Speedway. Benefiting from good pit stops, Stewart was able to hold on, and secure his 140th top-10 finish in 237 starts on a superspeedway.
“I’m not really that good here [smiles]," joked Stewart. "It tells you the car is better than I am probably. I think we’re capable of doing it. I mean, we’ve done it two weeks in a row now but I mean it’s still a little early to tell but I thought this week was a truer test than last week was. I was satisfied with the results of it. I mean, this is about where I would normally finish here [smiles] anyways. For some reason I’m not really that good here but the good thing is today was a big day in getting through how much is a little bit tight, a lot tight, the language I use about it, not necessarily bad but just different language about it gives him a better idea when it’s really getting bad one way or the other. We seemed to go back and forth on catching up with it so I was pretty happy with the communication today. The guys had really good pit stops. That last stop out there they got us out seventh and I couldn’t hold us up there. I felt like team-wise we’ve been solid for two and a half weeks straight here now.”
