The Biff Is Miffed At Himself
Monday, 23 February 2009 07:55

Roush Fenway Racing's Greg Biffle had a car capable of winning Sunday's Auto Club 500. Leading two times for sixteen laps, Biffle was one of the strongest cars in the field during the final stages of the 500-mile event. However, an uncharacteristic mistake by the driver of the No. 16 3M Ford Fusion cost this team a chance at their first win of 2009.

Hitting pit road for the final time of the day from the second spot, Biffle slid the tires as he pulled into his box. Missing his mark in his pit box, Biffle drove over the front tire changer's air hose. Biffle had to put the car in reverse, pull off the hose and then the crew went to work. Thanks to the miscue by the driver, the team lost nine spots on pit road and restarted the race with thirty-five laps to go in the eleventh spot.

While teammate Matt Kenseth and Jeff Gordon battled it out for the win, Biffle went to work making up for what he lost on pit road. Slicing his way through the field in the final thirty-five circuits, the driver of the No. 16 Ford was able to make his way to the fourth spot as the checkered flag fell.

"They should fire me," a disappointed Biffle said after coming home in the fourth spot. "I still can't believe I took a car that fast and finished fourth with it. I'm so proud of them for giving me that kind of a race car. They work really, really hard and I let them down."

After earning a top-20 last week in Daytona, Sunday's promising run gave Biffle high hopes for the rest of the year. However, Biffle struggled to get past his mistake on pit road that cost the team the win.

"Yeah, they're [in trouble] if this is the kind of car I'm going to have all year," Biffle said of the competition. "This thing was fast. Unbelievable. Unbelievable. I don't know how I'm going to sleep tonight. I'm just sick to my stomach, man, it almost brings tears to my eyes to know that I let the guys down like I did. When you you've got a car like that, it sucks to not win, and it sucks that it's your fault. If they'd have dropped a lugnut or something, it wouldn't have been a big deal. But, when it's your fault, it's really hard."
