Not A Bad Weekend For Rowdy
Monday, 23 February 2009 08:01

There is no doubt Kyle Busch will once again be a force to be reckoned with in 2009. The driver that dominated most of 2008 in each of NASCAR's three top series has already proved he is prepared to back up his performance and this time wants more.

The 23-year-old Las Vegas-native made NASCAR history on Saturday, becoming the only driver in the history of the sport to win two races on the same day at the same track in two different national touring series. The kid they call "Rowdy" dominated the Camping World Truck Series race Saturday afternoon, leading all but two green flag laps. Later that evening, Busch climbed behind the wheel of the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota in the Nationwide Series and celebrated his second win of the day.

Starting Sunday's Auto Club 500 from the tenth spot, Busch looked to make a clean sweep at the 2-mile D-shaped oval in Southern California. Knowing the odds were against him, Busch understood completing the sweep was going to be a tall order.

"The last one's always the hardest to get," Busch said after the race. "They leave it the hardest to get because it's on Sunday and it's the biggest show."

Not a factor for much of the race, Busch spent most of the evening battling with brother Kurt, but began to make his charge when it mattered most. With a little help from his Steve Addington-led pit crew, Busch left pit road on the final stop of the day in third place.

With only thirty-five laps to go, Busch could do little as Matt Kenseth and Jeff Gordon drove away to decide the race amongst themselves. Unable to keep up with the two former series champions, Busch shifted his focus to maintaining his third place finish.

"I couldn't even keep up with the 17 and the 24 on that last run," Busch explained. "Never thought it was a winning car. Felt like if I could just bide my time right there, I could finish third, just try to protect a third place finish.

"I had the best seat in the house for that battle. It was pretty cool to see those guys racing like that," Busch went on to say. "It was a good show for the fans. Their first good race they've had out here in a while. They stuck through the weather. That was cool to have all them here, too, being able to watch those guys, two superstars putting on a show like that."

While he was able to make his way to third, Busch was unable to earn five bonus points for leading a lap. After last week's more than disappointing finish at Daytona, Sunday evening's top-5 was able to bump Busch to eighteenth in the series standings after only two races. Next weekend it is off to Busch's home track at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. In five starts, the hometown driver has two top-5s and three top-10s and will sure to be a threat to the competition.
