Don't Bet Against Jack Roush
Wednesday, 25 February 2009 08:12

This weekend the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series rolls into the bright lights of Sin City as it tackles the first mile-and-a-half track of the 2009 season. Coming off two spectacular weekends, odds are the man they call the 'Cat in the Hat' will be betting big on one of his cars taking the checkered flag first come Sunday.

Since the Las Vegas Motor Speedway held its first Cup race in 1998, Roush's cars have been nothing short of dominant. In 52 total starts, Roush cars have six wins - including the inaugural and the most recent - (more than any other team), 15 top-5s, 29 top-10s and have an average finishing position of 13.2. To make their success even more staggering, consider the fact Jack Roush has celebrated in victory lane with one of his cars at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway 54.4 percent of the time the series has held a race there.

In 2003 and 2004, Matt Kenseth won back-to-back races at the 1.5-mile track and this year teammate Carl Edwards is hoping to do the same. During last year's event, Edwards had to fight off Kenseth, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. for most of the afternoon, but in the end took home the checkered flag for his first win at the Nevada track.

"We only get to go to Vegas once a year," Edwards pointed out.  "Last year was a blast. We won the race and I want to go back and win another one there. It's a fun race to win. The Victory Lane is in the Neon Garage Fan Zone. That's cool. It's an 'event' when you win that race. We have to keep Ford's winning streak alive. You know Matt Kenseth has won the first two races and we need to get our Ford into Victory Lane. That would be so cool."

Coming off the best start to a season in his career, Kenseth could not be headed to a better track. The winner of the first two events in 2009 has led a total of 438 laps at Las Vegas, scored two victories, four top-fives and five top-10 finishes. Always a threat at the 1.5-mile track, Kenseth's odds this weekend should be fairly strong (6/1 on to be exact).

For long-time Kenseth crew chief and now general manager of Roush Fenway Racing Robbie Reiser, the performance seen out of the No. 17 crew is only a fraction of what has been happening on a whole at the organization and is just a glimpse of things to come.

"Obviously to win the Daytona 500 is a big win. It's a different style race and to go back out to California and have all our cars basically run in the top 10 most of the night is good," Reiser said. "So about where we left off is about where we picked up and I think we have a lot of good things set up for this year so I think you'll see that type of performance week in and week out."

A contender in both events so far this year, Jamie McMurray has struggled to find the luck needed to finish the deal. After running up front for much of the afternoon in Daytona, the driver of the No. 26 Crown Royal Ford Fusion was taken out in the 'Big One' late in the race. This past weekend in California, it was a brake issue that spoiled a good showing.

"We've had such solid races so far this year with some really incredible race cars, so I know that we'll be able to qualify well again and finally be able to bring home a great finish at Vegas," McMurray confidently stated. "With Matt's (Kenseth) wins the past two weekends, I really feel that Roush Fenway is showcasing the talent and power that our organization is capable of this season and I know that our No. 26 team is looking to start our season off with the strong finish we deserve."

As a result of his struggles, McMurray is the only Roush Fenway Racing driver outside the top-10 in the series standings. A 37th in Daytona and a disappointing 16th-place finish last Sunday in Fontana has mired the Joplin, Missouri-native 28th in points.

Even the team's newest member, David Ragan has shown he can run towards the front and be a contender. A strong run in the Daytona 500 was backed up by another solid performance at the Auto Club Speedway. Unfortunately, a brush with the outside retaining wall spoiled his top-10 and resulted in a 17th-place run. Looking on the bright side, Ragan understands he has improved tremendously over the past two seasons and sees better things ahead.

"It's really important to get a good finish this weekend to stay in the top 10," Ragan argued. "Overall we tend to run well at mile-and-a-half tracks and we got a good finish last year at Vegas. The track is really fast with the new surface which makes for a fast-paced race. I think about getting that first win all the time and I can't wait to get it, maybe this weekend we'll finally walk away with a much-deserved victory."

With five cars, five talented drivers, some of the best pit crew members in the sport, a 54.4 percent winning rate and momentum on his side it will be hard to beat Jack Roush once again this weekend. Having the deck stacked in his favor, odds are pretty good that Roush will be celebrating in victory lane come Sunday.
