Friday's qualifying session for this weekend's Shelby 427 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway saw speeds pick up and eleven cars break Kasey Kahne's track record set in 2007. Fifty-one cars took time on the 1.5-mile tri-oval with eight cars heading home. When all was said and done it was hometown heroes Kurt and Kyle Busch that swept the top-spots. Kurt laid down a fast-lap of 29.08 seconds at a speed of 185.707 mph in his No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge. Less than a minute later, younger brother Kyle brought the hometown crowd to their feet running only .05 seconds faster.
After being excused from his official qualifying order (which was second) after an engine problem in practice, Busch rolled off pit road right after his older brother posted his fast lap. The two brothers from Las Vegas have never started on the front row together, and while Friday's results put them atop the leader board pole-sitter Kyle will be forced to the rear of the field for the start of Sunday's race. "Well we're just going to bid our time," the driver of the No. 18 M&M's Toyota said of coming from the back of the field. "All the guys on this team did an awesome job changing the engine today and we look forward to hopefully doing it again Sunday." Hendrick Motorsports' Jimmie Johnson laid down the third-fastest time of the session. The two-time defending series champion ran a lap very close to Kurt Busch's and because of Kyle's engine change will move up to start in the first spot. "It felt like we were a little tight," Johnson said of his No. 48 Lowe's/Kobalt Chevrolet. "It was probably a little too comfortable for what we needed to be here. Just a little bit off the pole, so real happy with the effort we put in. Wish we were just a little bit better, but the Kobalt Tools Impala has running really good." Florida-native David Reutimann led the charge for Michael Waltrip Racing, who put three cars in the top-14. Reutimann posted the fourth-fastest time of the session with a lap of 29.091 seconds at a speed of 185.624 mph. "The Aaron's Dream Machine has been good since we unloaded," the driver of the No. 00 Toyota said after making his qualifying run. "We were just a little short there. It got a little tight on the exit of (Turn) 4 and that cost a little time. I'm just real proud of all my guys. They're doing a great job, Rodney Childers and everybody. Aaron's is on board for a full year, so life's good right now." Working out of the same shop with Reutimann and MWR, Australian-driver Marcus Ambrose rounded out the top-5. Ambrose put his No. 47 Kingsford Toyota in the fifth-spot with a lap of 29.117 seconds at a speed of 185.459 mph. Travis Kvapil, Dave Blaney, Mike Garvey, Jeremy Mayfield, Sterling Marlin, Scott Riggs, Tony Raines and Dexter Bean failed to make the show and will head home early. "We unloaded off the truck in race trim and had really good speed," Kvapil said after failing to make the show. "We went to qualifying trim and not that we didn't have good speed, but it just didn't drive quite like we had it in race trim. It was bouncing off the track and we had some trouble, so we made some adjustments and got it off the race track, but we got it too tight for qualifying. That hurt our speed a little bit or we didn't get the pick up that we needed. It was close, but there are a lot of fast cars. The field is really tight and if you're off just a little bit, that hurts it a lot." The Cup cars have two practice sessions Saturday afternoon before taking the green flag for the Shelby 427 on Sunday.
