Final practice for the Sprint Cup Series is in the books at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and the Hendrick Motorsports teammates of Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon topped the leader board. Rolling off from the inside of the front row, Johnson showed he is ready to step up his game this weekend.
Running a total of forty-eight laps during Saturday's final practice session, Johnson posted the fastest time with a lap of 29.575 seconds at a speed of 182.587 mph. With three wins at the 1.5-mile tri-oval, Johnson is looking to climb his way into the top-10 in series standings. "I think the track has been aging and has been much more competitive and more fun to drive and better action for the fans," Johnson said of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. "So I'm just looking forward to it. It's nice to be back in the swing of things and back in a rhythm and a normal work week and being on a track where we actually have to drive it and worry about set-up and springs and shocks and all that stuff so I'm real excited to be back."
Teammate Jeff Gordon posted the second-fastest time of the final practice session after running a total of forty-four laps. With a fast-lap of 29.743 seconds at a speed of 181.555 mph, Gordon hopes to continue his strong start to the 2009 season with. "I've always loved coming out here. It's such a cool event in such a great city," Gordon explained. "It seems to be one of the more popular events for the fans. I just came off of a great finish last week. We're really excited about this weekend and I'm feeling pretty good about it." Penske Racing teammates Kurt Busch and Sam Hornish Jr. ran the third and fourth-fastest times of the session in their Dodges. Hometown favorite Busch will start Sunday's Shelby 427 from the outside of row number one. Hendrick Motorsports' Mark Martin rounded out the top-5, while Kyle Busch, Jamie McMurray, Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards and Kasey Kahne made up the rest of the top-10. Sunday's Shelby 427 from the Las Vegas Motor Speedway is scheduled for a 4:30pm E.T start and can be seen live on FOX with coverage beginning at 3:30pm E.T.
