Logano Collects Impressive Finish At Las Vegas
Monday, 02 March 2009 10:49

As the one they call "Sliced Bread" crossed the finish line in Sunday's Shelby 427 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the 13th spot, he earned the highest finish in his short career as a Cup Series driver.

Rookie driver Joey Logano began his weekend on the right foot when he also set a personal qualifying record, he started the race in 20th.

“Yeah, that was really good [smiles]," said Logano. "We just kept our nose clean the whole day, kept it out of the wrecks, just kind of stayed with the main plan and that was finish. We were able to make adjustments during the race. We were good the first run and seemed like we went one way and go back the other way and we finally got it right with a couple of pit stops left. Everyone did a great job. The whole team did great all day and you can’t ask for anything better than that.”

In addition to his finish, Logano was able to earn some valuable experience as the race was plagued with a track record 13 cautions. Over the course of the event the teenage driver took the lead one time for one lap, and became the first rookie this season to lead a lap.

“From Daytona, I wasn’t that good at all [smiles] and I feel like I’m getting better and I’m learning every weekend so much and it’s helping me so much," Logano explained. "I think it’s kind of what’s kind of going on right now. Hopefully we keep this going. Right now, the last two races, California and here we were good by the end of the race. We’ve got to kind of work on getting good earlier.”

With his finish, Logano took command of the Rookie of the Year standings by one point over Scott Speed. Beginning to get comfortable in his car, Logano admits that he still has plenty to learn.

“Yeah, definitely getting more comfortable in these cars," Logano stated. "It just takes time. It’s part of it. By no means are we there yet but we’re getting closer.”

"It went pretty good," Logano added. "I think this is exactly what we needed with the Home Depot Toyota. Stayed out of trouble and the whole team did an awesome job today. This is what we needed to do. I look at myself and say hey, I probably could have got a top-10, but that’s part of being a rookie and I learned from it.”
