After taking second on the charts in Saturday's first practice session, Carl Edwards took off in the Cup Series' final practice and claimed the top spot. With a lap of 30.882 seconds at a speed of 179.522 miles per hour, Edwards is on a mission to earn his second consecutive win at Atlanta after taking the checkered in the Pep Boy's Auto 500 in the fall of 2008. Kasey Kahne trailed Edwards in the practice, turning a lap of 31.008 seconds at a speed of 178.793 miles per hour. With a streak of dominant performances at 1.5 mile tracks in 2008, Kahne is certainly one to watch in Sunday's Kobalt Tools 500.
Denny Hamlin, Kurt Busch and Jamie McMurray concluded the top-5 of the session. Polesitter Mark Martin posted a lap good enough for the ninth spot, and defending race winner Kyle Busch earned the 12th position.
