Every now and then something happens in NASCAR that just makes you scratch your head and ask, "What were they thinking?" This week, that award goes to Jimmy Watts, gas man on the No. 47 JTG-Daugherty Racing team. After a tire rolled away from their pit box under green flag stops, Watts ran halfway on the frontstretch grass to retrieve the escaping tire. With cars running full-speed through the dog-leg and others hitting pit road for service, NASCAR was forced to throw the caution in order to ensure the crew member's safety.
Risking his safety simply to retrieve a loose tire was no excuse for this crew member's actions. Putting himself in danger, Watts forced NASCAR's hand and ruined the race for many of the competitors. With green flag stops cycling through when the yellow flag came out, a number of teams were caught one or more laps down to leader Kurt Busch. With only five cars that had yet to pit, the majority of the field was directly affected by this crew member's untimely and reckless decision. "We don't want to ruin anybody's race - especially NASCAR's," driver Marcos Ambrose said of his crew member's actions. "We want to play by the rules and do everything right. If we did something wrong then we need to look at it and not do it again." It is doubtful Watts will be making the same mistake any time soon. After putting himself in harms way, NASCAR immediately suspended him for the remainder of the event. "I'd have to come off the top of the box," winning crew chief Pat Tryson said when asked if one of his crew members had pulled the stunt. "We know better than that. I'm sure that person is going to learn. You just can't do that because anything can happen. Somebody could get hurt." "Well, it is a dangerous situation," added Dale Earnhardt Jr. "NASCAR probably did what they thought was the right thing so I can't argue with it. I mean, it is unsafe. I wouldn't want to see anybody get hurt." The reckless move by Watts is something the gas man will most likely regret for a long time. Suspended from the remainder of the event, NASCAR is likely to discuss the incident and announce any further penalties, fines or suspensions later this week.
