The two-day Goodyear tire test at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway is in the books and the feedback seems to be positive. Working to find the proper compound for the May Sprint All-Star Race and the 50th running of the Coca-Cola 600, Goodyear enlisted the help of Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne, Marcos Ambrose and Paul Menard.
"I'm very encouraged by this tire and talking with (Goodyear's) engineers, they plan to run this tire a lot more and start working it in," three-time Coke 600 winner Jimmie Johnson explained. "It (the tire) was new in Las Vegas but hopefully this is a tire we can use at a lot of places to bring some stability back. There's a lot of speed out there right now and with comfort comes speed. That's really what it boils down to."
Many drivers sang the praises of Goodyear in Atlanta for the quality of tire Goodyear brought to the track in Las Vegas. Providing an impressive amount of grip while also allowing for high speeds, the tire manufacturer seems to have hit on something.
"Goodyear has done a great job over the past six months to a year in developing a tire you can race side-by-side on," defending Sprint All-Star Race and Coca-Cola 600 winner Kasey Kahne added. "This car threw some different things at them at first, but I think Las Vegas was a huge improvement and I think that same tire will be good here."
One of the most crucial parts of putting on a good race, Goodyear has worked hard at overcoming criticism and bringing the proper tire each time they enter the garage. Tire test such as the one at Lowe’s this week have helped the manufacturer continue to fine-tune their product before race weekend.
