Martin Captures Second Straight Pole
Friday, 20 March 2009 16:18

mark-martinFor the second week in a row veteran Mark Martin will lead the field to the green flag on Sunday afternoon.  Throwing his No. 5 Kellogg's/CARQUEST Chevrolet into the corner, Martin was able to hang on for a lap of 15.256 seconds at a speed of 125.773 mph to take the top-spot.  Earning his 42nd career pole position, Martin is looking forward to Sunday's Food City 500.

"The car was really fast and really comfortable," Martin said after earning his second Coors Light Pole Award of 2009.  "With the things that have happened to us in the races it feels really good to show everybody we've still speed and we're going to keep digging."

Another driver looking for a great weekend in Bristol is Ryan Newman.  Early season struggles have mired this team deep in the standings and in need of a great run.  Starting the weekend off on the right foot, Newman put his No. 39 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet on the outside of the front row. Laying down a lap of 15.260 seconds at a speed of 125.740 mph, Newman earned his best qualifying spot of the 2009 season.

Defending series champion Jimmie Johnson was third-fastest in Friday qualifying session with a lap of 15.295 seconds at a speed of 125.453 mph.  One of the only tracks Johnson has yet to score a victory on, Friday's time trial may show that Johnson is starting to learn how to get around the 'World's Fastest Half Mile' and get the job done.

Roush Fenway Racing's Greg Biffle was fourth-quick in his No. 16 3M Ford Fusion, while Kasey Kahne rounded out the top-5.

With forty-five cars taking time, there were only two cars that headed home without making the show.  For the third week in a row, both Jeremy Mayfield and Scott Riggs failed to qualify.  David Ragan and Pual Menard made the show thanks to owner points.

The Cup cars are done with on-track action for the day, with two practice sessions scheduled for Saturday.  Sunday's Food City 500 will get underway at 2 p.m. E.T. and can be seen on your local Fox network.  hardcore-race-fans.com
