This weekend's performance at the Bristol Motor Speedway by teammates Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin continued a developing trend; Joe Gibb Racing dominance at Bristol. Since Tony Stewart's dominating performance in 2006 in which he led a total of 245 laps en route to the win, the Gibbs cars have remained the class of the field at the high-banked half mile, but they have not been able to produce the results. Sunday's Food City 500 put all of that behind them.
By giving coach Gibbs a 1-2 finish, Busch and Hamlin ended a six-race winless streak at the track they have run better than most. Over the last few years the Gibbs cars have found their way to the front of the field at Bristol and they tended to stay there. Since Stewart's impressive run in 2006, Gibbs cars have led a total of 1,232 laps but was unable to secure a win.
In the two previous spring races at Bristol, Hamlin was leading on the white flag lap only to have someone else make the drive to victory lane. In both instances, fuel pick up issues on a late-race restart cost the Virginia-native from finishing the deal and coming home with a win. Faced with another late-race restart during Sunday's event, Hamlin was confident the would be no issues this time. "I knew we had enough fuel this time," Hamlin explained after the race. "Fuel wasn't an issue. I knew, I mean, we built a fuel cell dynos and everything. We've done everything to try to eliminate that problem. I think we fixed it. "I wasn't concerned this time over years past." With so much that could go wrong and so much at stake, Busch understood that one mistake by anyone around him could ruin a great day. "You never know if a lap car's gonna turn another lap car and spin in front of you and you're going to T?bone the guy or whatever," Busch said of racing at Bristol. "You never know what's gonna happen. That's what so tricky about this racetrack. That's what makes it so fun when you do win here, you know all the things that can happen." For team owner Joe Gibbs, Sunday's 1-2 finish is a b it of redemption for all of the struggles the team has experienced over the last few years. Finally getting back to victory lane at the 'World's Fastest Half Mile' had the coach in a great mood and appreciative that everything went his team's way. "I was thinking back to we've been pretty strong here for a number of races, but I'm not so sure we even finished in the top 10," Gibbs said following his team's impressive run. "Maybe Denny got a sixth or something. We had such a struggle here. This is a tough place to win a race. It's long, a lot of laps, a lot of things can happen. We really appreciate today. I tell you, I guess it gives you a better appreciation for things when it's so hard to win one." While things may not have gone their way over the past few years at Bristol, there is no doubt the Gibbs cars have been the dominating force. Unable to seal the deal in previous years, Sunday's results have this team putting their previous diappointments behind them.
