ken-schraderKen Schrader has come close to visiting victory lane at the Rockingham Speedway on several occasions and will try again this Sunday when he returns to the ‘Rock’ for the Carolina 200.

Leading the 2008 Carolina 500 with five laps to go, Schrader looked to be a sure bet for the win before being passed by Joey Logano. It was not the first time Ken Schrader narrowly missed scoring a win at the legendary track located in Race Country USA.

“I always did like it [racing at Rockingham] just because of the way the track would work on the tires and to do well you really had to use your foot there a lot,” said Schrader.

During the running of the 1991 Cup race at Rockingham, Schrader was leading with ten laps to go when the caution flag came out. NASCAR had begun using different pit road rules at the time in an effort to make pit road safer. Schrader was unable to pit with the first group of cars and ended up exiting pit road behind eventual winner, Kyle Petty.

“I was leading and the yellow came out and it was when they had you come in at different times and they divided the field up by which yellow you could come in,” said Schrader. “We lost the race on that late yellow and we ran second but I just always really liked the place.”
