“Short Track Showdown” Set For April 30
Thursday, 16 April 2009 08:28

denny-hamlinAs the schedule creeps closer to the May 1-2 race weekend at the Richmond International Raceway, Virginia-native Denny Hamlin is gearing up for his second annual “Short Track Showdown” at the Southside Speedway. A charity event at Hamlin’s home-track, the second annual race will bring some of NASCAR’s biggest stars to the short track for intense action for a great cause.

Joining Hamlin for the second running of his charity event will be Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Kyle Busch and Joey Logano, along with spotter Curtis Markham. In addition, former JGR teammate and two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Tony Stewart will also be on hand for the 175-lap Limited Late Model event.

“I’m excited.  To come up here and be with Denny, Kyle and Joey for a good cause is a lot of fun,” Stewart said of being added to the event. “I’ve been racing for 29 years and I like going to places I haven’t been before.  It’s something we’ve been looking forward to for a long time. It’s fun to race with guys you haven’t raced with before.”

“It will be fun with Denny, Tony, Kyle and Curtis,” Logano added. “I’ve never been there (Southside Speedway) and don’t know much about it, I’ve never driven a Late Model Stock Car.  I’ve driven more Super Late Models, so it will be a bunch of new things to look forward to.”

The second annual “Short Track Showdown” at the Southside Speedway will benefit the Denny Hamlin Foundation. Created in 2008, the Denny Hamlin Foundation is geared towards raising funds and awareness for the research and treatment of Cystic Fibrosis, in addition to supporting other not-for-profit corporations that help children with debilitating illness.

Last year’s event raised $50,000 for the Denny Hamlin Foundation.

Tickets are available at the Southside Speedway ticket office on April 17th and April 24th starting at 6pm. Tickets will also be available the day of the event, April 30th, at 4pm and can be purchased with cash only. Proceeds from the event’s ticket sales, silent auction and raffles will go to the Denny Hamlin Foundation.
