A front-runner in all aspects of NASCAR, Roush Fenway Racing is no different when it comes to being environmentally friendly. Last year, the team recycled over 66 tons of plastic, paper and metal waste as well as reducing the overall amount of waste produced by over 11 tons. Currently, Roush Fenway recycles nearly 96 percent of every race car.
“Some people might be surprised to learn that a NASCAR team is working to reduce its ecological impacts. But this good effort by Roush Fenway Racing underscores the fact that every type of business can and must take steps to operate more efficiently,” said Dr. Allen Hershkowitz, a senior scientist at the NRDC (Natural Resources Defence Council) who is advising Roush Fenway. “Roush Fenway has identified meaningful steps that will have a positive impact on climate change and we applaud them for that. Roush Fenway Racing has set an example that any NASCAR team, fan or race track can follow.” In order to continuously reduce the team’s ecological footprint, Roush Fenway has contacted the Carolina Consulting Group to perform an independent energy audit in order to target additional areas of improvement. The team has pledged to reach or exceed a goal of an overall 10% improvement in indoor air quality, as well as reductions in water consumption and energy usage and a continued increase in waste reduction and recycling. A continued effort to be environmentally friendly not only helps the Earth, it also keeps Roush Fenway Racing running as efficiently as possible. “If you do not add environmental thinking to your business strategy you run the risk of missing the upside opportunities in your market,” said Ian Prince, CFM, LEED AP and manager of real estate and sustainability for Roush Fenway Racing. “Managing a NASCAR team more sustainably is most successful when you have a defined focus, and Roush Fenway has always been focused on being efficient in our operations." The entire Roush Fenway organization challenges other NASCAR teams to follow their lead and implement environmental initiatives in order to be good stewards of the planet. MORE NASCAR CUP NEWS
