After failing to qualify for tonight’s Southern 500 presented by GoDaddy.com, Scott Speed has been given a second chance at the ‘Lady in Black’ thanks to Joe Nemechek and NEMCO Motorsports. The owner/driver agreed to put the rookie driver behind the wheel of his car for Saturday night’s event.
Speed wrecked his primary car during practice on Friday and the team was forced to roll out the back-up No. 82 Red Bull Toyota. In yesterday’s qualifying effort, Speed was the 41st-fastest qualifier and was one of only two drivers to miss the show.
Speed took part of Friday night’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race driving Michael Waltrip’s No. 99 Toyota and was able to come home in the 13th-spot.
A crew member from Speed’s Red Bull Racing team confirmed his regular crew will be pitting the NEMCO Motorsports for today’s event. Despite Nemechek’s 32nd-place qualifying effort, Speed will have to go to the back of the pack for the start of Saturday’s 500-mile event. MORE NASCAR CUP NEWS
