Mayfield Releases Statement After Suspension
Saturday, 09 May 2009 15:41

jeremy-mayfieldNASCAR officials made the surprise announcement Saturday evening that Jeremy Mayfield had failed a NASCAR-mandated drug test. As a result of the positive test results, the sanctioning body has indefinitely suspended the owner/driver.

In a statement obtained by HardcoreRaceFans.com Saturday evening, Mayfield attributes the positive test results to a combination of over the counter medicine and prescription pills.

“As both a team owner and a driver in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, I have immense respect for the enforcement policies NASCAR has in place,” Mayfield explained. “In my case, I believe that the combination of a prescribed medicine and an over the counter medicine reacted together and resulted in a positive drug test.  My Doctor and I are working with both Dr. Black and NASCAR to resolve this matter.”

As a car owner, Mayfield not only has himself to think about, but also a host of employees. NASCAR Vice President of Corporate Communications Jim Hunter made it clear Mayfield would not be suspended as both a driver and an owner.

That being said, Mayfield confirmed his team would be at next weekend’s events at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway with an interim owner.

“Mayfield Motorsports remains committed to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and the organization will announce an interim owner and a temporary replacement driver early next week,” Mayfield added.  “Those roles will commence immediately beginning with next week’s Sprint Open and continuing through Charlotte and beyond.”
