In the house of the Charlotte Bobcats, it was Richard Childress Racing’s CAT team that was fastest of all the pit crews during Thursday night’s fifth annual NASCAR Sprint Pit Crew Challenge. Putting a whooping on the No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports crew in the final round, the No. 31 crew set a new record with a time of 22.115 seconds.
"I'm really proud of them," driver Jeff Burton said of his team. "They put so much effort into the pit stops, and they take this very seriously. They truly are athletes, and they work very hard at it."
Despite losing to the No. 11 team in the semi-finals, the No. 31 crew benefited from a three-second penalty assessed to the Joe Gibbs Racing team thanks to a loose lug nut. The No. 43 team was able to advance through each round thanks to penalties given out to each team they went up against en route to the finals. In the semi-finals, the No. 43 crew upset the top-seeded No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing crew after they were given a five second penalty for not getting enough fuel in the car. Defending winners, the No. 83 Red Bull Racing crew, were surprisingly knocked out of contention in the first round thanks to the No. 43 crew. Individual champions were also crowned during the event with Preston Cordell of the No. 1 Earnhardt Ganassi Racing team taking the title for the gas men, teammates Eric Hoyle (catch-can), Dennis Terry (front-tire changer), Shannon Keys (front-tire carrier) and Jeff Kerr (jackman) also earned individual titles. Rear-tire changer Jake Seminara and rear-tire carrier Kenny Barber of the No. 18 team also took home individual titles. MORE NASCAR SPRINT CUP NEWS
