A day off from action at Lowe's Motor Speedway could not keep Kyle Busch from competing against members of the media and other celebrity guest Friday afternoon. The kid they call 'Rowdy' took part in the Lil' 600 at Speed Street in Uptown Charlotte to benefit the Kyle Busch Foundation.
With the help of Endurance Karting, Busch and the gathered guest - including HardcoreRaceFans.com's Jay W. Pennell - took to the makeshift track and tested their skills. Running 10 horsepower performance karts, drivers suited up, strapped on the helmets and hit the track.
HardcoreRaceFans.com was on hand to cheer on their representative and bring all of the action to you the fans. Unfortunately for Busch, a mechanical issue with the carburetor knocked him out of contention in the media race. With Busch out of the picture, HardcoreRaceFans.com's own Jay Pennell took control of the 20-lap event. As the laps wound down, Pennell spun his kart and was passed by Matt Crossman of the Sporting News. While upset he did not take the win, Pennell was able to secure the fastest lap of the race.
"It was great to come out here and be a part of the Lil' 600," Pennell said following the event. "I wish Kyle's kart had not broken, because I started in the back and was making my way towards the front. It would have been great seeing what I had for him." Busch hoped back behind the wheel for the celebrity race and tested his strength against karting regular Don Osmond and others; including Charlotte mayor Pat McCrory and team president J.D. Gibbs. Busch and Osmond raced side-by-side lap after lap. Osmond was able to get the advantage, until a black flag for spinning out another driver brought Busch back into contention.
In all, the event was a success and featured some great racing for the fans gathered in the hot Charlotte sun. MORE NASCAR NEWS
