Dark clouds hovered over the Lowe’s Motor Speedway Saturday as the Sprint Cup cars headed onto the track for their final practice session of the weekend. Just minutes after the session began, the skies opened up and heavy rain drenched the 1.5-mile track. The red and black flag was displayed and practice was cut short.
Hendrick Motorsports’ Jimmie Johnson had the fastest lap of the session with a time of 29.446 seconds at a speed of 183.387 mph. The three-time back-to-back-to-back Coca-Cola 600 winner also ran the most laps of the session with ten.
Nationwide Series pole sitter Carl Edwards was second-fastest in the abbreviated session. Edwards ran only three laps before the rains came, but was able to post a lap of 29.471 seconds at 183.231 mph on his first time around the speedway. Denny Hamlin, who was fastest in the day’s first session was third-quick in this practice, while teammate Joey Logano and Red Bull Racing’s Brian Vickers rounded out the top-5. Pole sitter Ryan Newman ran eight laps in the session, good enough for the sixteenth spot. COMPLETE PRACTICE RESULTS MORE NASCAR NEWS
