Rain Once Again Threatening Coca-Cola 600
Monday, 25 May 2009 12:00

david-reutimannFor the third time today, rain has brought the Coca-Cola 600 to a halt. With Kasey Kahne charging hard towards leader Kyle Busch, rain quickly approached the speedway over the first and second turns. NASCAR threw the sixth caution of the day on Lap 221, but the rains came on heavy once again bringing out the fourth red flag of the event.

Under the sixth caution, crew chief Steve Addington and Kyle Busch debated whether or not to pit and in the end, Busch led the field to pit road for service. Carl Edwards, Brian Vickers and Bobby Labonte took only two tires, while most everyone else opted for four fresh Goodyears. Looking at the radar, David Reutimann, pole-sitter Ryan Newman and Robby Gordon chose to stay out on the track to put themselves ahead of everyone else. As the field caught up to those three cars and the pace car led them around the 1.5-mile facility, heavier rains came and the cars were once again brought to a stop.

With 227 of the 400 laps complete, the 50th running of the Coca-Cola 600 is an official race. If the track cannot be salvaged, the race can be ended with Reutimann out front. There is a string of inclement weather moving towards the speedway, but the jet dryers have just started up again.
