I’m A Hardcore Race Fan – Brandy Moore-Gregory
Tuesday, 26 May 2009 06:44

brandy-1There are many types of Hardcore Race Fans throughout this great nation. From first timers to life-long fans, Hardcore Race Fans are about as diverse a group as you could get. One thing all of them have in common is the desire to have a great time and a love for the sport of racing. One fan – Brandy Moore-Gregory – has taken that love of NASCAR, and in particular Jeff Gordon, and made it a permanent fixture on her body.

“The shoulder came about because I couldn’t get anyone to do it on my ears,” Brandy told HardcoreRaceFans.com. “I had to have a tattoo, so I got the shoulder. Two years later I found someone that would do the ears and now I don’t lose earrings.”

The South Carolina-native became a fan of NASCAR in 1993, the same year Jeff Gordon broke onto the scene. While her parents had been big time Dale Earnhardt fans for years, this self-described “rebellious kid” wanted nothing to do with the sport. Yet, that all changed when Gordon came along.

“Jeff came along and I was told to pick a car. I picked the prettiest one on the track and of course everyone hated him so I loved him that much more,” she explained. “Everybody called him gay and said all these words about him. The more they talked crap about him the more I liked him.”

When asked what will happen when Gordon retires or, more unlikely, if he ever changes his number, she proved she’s hardcore saying, “I’ll be dedicated to death do us part, whether he knows it or not.”

brandy-2Brandy – ears, shoulder and all – had the chance to meet Jeff Gordon. “He just kind of shook his head and was amazed by it really,” she said with a laugh.

Her husband is alright with the love of Jeff Gordon, as long as it does not make its way into the bedroom. “I have a Jeff Gordon room in my house,” Brandy went on to say. “As long as it’s not in the bedroom it’s allowed to be a room.”

As her father walked up to our conversation, he told of last year when Brandy was pregnant and got drivers and racing personalities to autograph the shirt she was wearing on her stomach.

“This way when the boy is older we can give him the shirt,” he explained. “He’s too young to come to the races this year, but this way he’ll know that was his first race.”

brandy-3The group went on to show me around their elaborate setup hidden inside Darlington’s infield camping area; complete with racing flags, ample amounts of food and assorted beverages, a stand to watch the race and a white tarp they have collected autographs on for the past five years - including that of this particular writer.

Attending the Darlington race with a group of close friends and relatives, Brandy Moore-Gregory will be a Hardcore Race Fan for the rest of her life. Tattoos may be permanent, but the love for racing and the desire to have a great time with friends and family is something that will last much, much longer.
