Green Race Track May Lead To Tire Issues
Sunday, 31 May 2009 04:25

dover-international-speedwayThroughout the weekend here at the Dover International Speedway, one of the biggest concerns in the garage has been tire wear. Issues were seen in both the Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series events and with rain in the area this morning the track has now been washed clean of its rubber.

The concrete surface took longer than expected in both of Saturday’s races to rubber up, but by the end of the truck race the process had finally began to show. As the cars run around the track lap after lap, the tires wear laying the hot rubber on the track. This process provides the cars more grip and better tire wear throughout the length of a run. With Sunday morning’s rain, all of the rubber laid down on Saturday has now been washed away, leaving a green race track.

With the Cup cars gearing up to race 400-miles on a green race track, teams are expecting to see heavy tire wear once the green flag drops on the Autism Speaks 400. A fast race track with high banks, Dover is a monster of a race track that has been known to tear up many a race car. If tire wear becomes an issue and failures are seen, the SAFER barrier may be put to the test many times throughout the day.
