The NASCAR Sprint Cup cars hit the 2-mile D-shaped oval in Michigan Saturday morning for the first of two practice sessions in preparation for the LifeLock 400. Running under overcast skies, Joe Gibbs Racing's Denny Hamlin posted the fastest lap of the session. The driver of the No. 11 FedEx Express Toyota ran a fast-lap of 38.316 seconds at a speed of 187.911 mph. Sitting atop the speed charts, Hamlin once again showed his car is consistently fast. If this team can ever put their bad luck behind them, the competition better look out.
Veteran Mark Martin was second-quick in the day's first session in the No. 5 CARQUEST/Kellog's Chevrolet. The four-time Michigan winner posted a fast-lap of 38.404 seconds at a speed of 187.480 mph. Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards and Gerg Biffle rounded out the top-5.
The session was not without its moments. Defending series champion Jimmie Johnson looped his No. 48 Lowe's Chevrolet off the fourth turn early in the session after racing hard with Tony Stewart. Johnson took his ride to the garage and rejoined the practice to post the eighth-fastest lap.
Two-time Michigan winner Greg Biffle also spun his No. 16 3M Ford, but the Biff lost it off Turn 2. There was no damage to the No. 16 and Biffle was able to run the fifth-fastest time of the morning session. There is one more session scheduled for the Cup cars before Sunday's LifeLock 400.
