In the house of Roush, Hendrick Motorsports teammates Mark Martin and Dale Earnhardt Jr. swept the top two spots on the leaderboard in Saturday's final practice session for NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series at the Michigan International Speedway. Martin was second-fastest in the day's morning practice and backed that up with fast-lap of 38.865 seconds at a speed of 185.257 mph on his first lap of the session.
Returning to the site of his last win, Dale Earnhardt Jr. showed signs of improvement by putting his No. 88 Chevrolet second on the speed charts. Working with new crew chief Lance McGrew, Earnhardt Jr. ran a total of 34 laps in preparation for Sunday's main event.
"Lance (McGrew) is doing a great job," Earnhardt Jr. said. "All of the other guys on the road crew have stepped up and what that means to me is when I come in here and I can see the different disposition on everyone's face I'm more positive about what kind of lap time I'm going to get ready to run in the car. Lance and I have been talking during the week about everything that comes to mind and having consistent discussions to try to understand where each of us is at, what our opinion and attitude is. I think it just feels like this should be turning around and should begin to work and I feel confidence. It gives me confidence." Pole-sitter Brian Vickers had the third-fastest lap of the session in his No. 83 Red Bull Toyota, followed by Greg Biffle in the No. 16 3M Ford. Running only nine laps, Clint Bowyer was able to post the fifth-fastest time. Looking to conserve the engine for Sunday's race, Bowyer appeared confident as he exited the car early in practice.
Carl Edwards, David Ragan, Joey Logano, Robby Gordon and Casey Mears rounded out the top-10. MORE NASCAR NEWS
