Martin Wins On Fuel Mileage

martin-michiganMark Martin knows when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em and Sunday at the Michigan International Speedway it was his fuel saving strategy that earned him his third NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory of 2009.

"I couldn't run with them and save gas too, so I had to let them go," Martin said of leaders Jimmy Johnson and Greg Biffle, who both ran out of gas on the final lap. "When I saw Jimmy (Johnson) slow down I told them on the radio, 'I'm going to run hard now.'"

Jimmy Johnson led 145 of the 200 laps and looked like he would cruise to victory when his car suddenly slowed at the start - finish line while taking the white flag. Biffle passed Johnson and was out front only briefly, running out of fuel on the backstretch with Martin gaining rapidly. Martin took the lead going into turn 3 before running out of gas himself at the exit of turn 4, literally coasting to the checkerd flag.

"The 48 came up there and ran like we weren't on a fuel-economy run," Biffle said. "I messed with him a little bit. It made me use too much throttle and burned up the gas."

Jeff Gordon finished second, giving Hendrick Motorsports a one - two sweep, Carl Edwards fourth and Greg Biffle was able to salvage a 5th place finish. Jimmy Johnson finished 22nd.
