Prior to leading the final practice in the Nationwide Series, David Ragan kicked off his run at the top in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series’ opening practice session.

With a time of 47.191 seconds and a top speed of 190.714 miles per hour, Ragan took the No. 6 UPS Ford to a place he has struggled to reach all season… the top. Looking to make a turn-around similar to his Truck Series teammate Colin Braun, Ragan has nine races (including Saturday’s) to climb the points ladder if he wants to make the Chase cutoff.

Another driver making an appearance at the top was Casey Mears. Taking his No. 07 Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet fielded by Richard Childress Racing around Daytona International Speedway in 47.203 seconds with a high speed of 190.666 miles per hour, Mears’ lap was good enough to land him in the second position.

The opening session’s top-5 was concluded by Jamie McMurray, Joey Logano and Brian Vickers.

Due to rain at the track the series’ final practice session has been delayed.
