Regan Smith continued his streak of running at the finish in all of his 52 career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Smith and Furniture Row Racing crew chief Jay Guy gambled on the setup for the Brickyard 400 after encountering a suspension problem in happy hour on Saturday. "After practice on Saturday we found a problem with our left-front spring," explained Guy. "Because of the spring problem we did not learn anything from the practice session and basically had no data on how to tune the car to Regan's liking. We all got together Saturday night to discuss a setup, but we knew that it was a 50-50 gamble of hitting it right."
Unfortunately for the 78 team, it did not work to their advantage, resulting in a 39th place finish. "Today just wasn't our day," said Smith. "But we didn't give up and worked on the car until we started to click off respectable lap times late in the race. We're a better team than what we showed today." The single car team based in Colorado could have easily packed it up and headed home but decided to stick it out, a move they hope will help on their next visit to Indy. "I guess we could have called it quits early and might have only lost a spot or two in the finishing order, but we didn't want to leave this place without learning something that could help us in the future," offered Guy. "The good news is that what we eventually learned today will be a benefit." The part time Furniture Row Racing team's next race will be at Bristol on Saturday, August 22. MORE NASCAR NEWS
