This weekend on the road course in Watkins Glen, Roush Fenway Racing’s Greg Biffle will be racing for more than just the win. Currently sitting twelfth in the standings, Biffle has a 101 point cushion over Kyle Busch in thirteenth, yet he can in no way breathe easy.
Coming off a fifteenth-place finish Monday at the Pocono Raceway, Biffle fell one spot to the bubble position for making the Chase. The 2009 season has been quite the rollercoaster ride for Biffle and the No. 16 team. Headed to the twists and turns of the road course in the Finger Lakes region of New York, the Biff is looking to put his season back on track and solidify a Chase berth.
The Washington-native has six top-5s and nine top-10s thus far in 2009, however the No. 16 Ford Fusion has finished in the top five only once in the last six races. With one career victory at Watkins Glen in a Truck Series race in 2000, Biffle is optimistic at his chances to score a solid finish and move up the standings. “I like road course racing. It breaks up the season a little,” Biffle explained. “We had a top-10 finish at Watkins Glen in 2007 and had a top-10 run going last year when we got on a different pit cycle than the leaders. I think it’s reasonable to shoot for a top-10 finish this weekend. We had a good run with this car at Infineon but had to pit late for fuel. Even though the Glen is a little bit of a faster track with a different configuration, I think we’ve got a good car for this weekend. The double-file restarts will be tricky and track position will be crucial. There are a few drivers in this series who have a lot of road course experience and if I can just hold my own with them and get out of there with a top-10 or top-five finish, I think that would be a reasonable expectation.” With the Chase fast approaching, Biffle knows that his team must get the job done week-in and week-out if they want to have a shot at championship at the end of the year. The problem is the competition is getting tougher and tougher each week, but the Biff is up for the challenge. “We certainly know that we need to continue to run like we did this last weekend at Indy, and we feel like we’ve been a team capable of running like that - we have run like that, actually, this whole season – but the three races prior to that, obviously, a lot of issues,” Biffle admitted. “We had troubles on pit road, troubles with the car, track position, so we needed to get back on track and we did that at Indy. We like this racetrack. We really like Watkins Glen, Michigan. So, we feel like if we can keep these top-fives up, certainly that’s what we need to do to get in (to the Chase). The bad part is that Juan Pablo and Kasey Kahne are good here (Pocono), and of course they run good at the road course with Kasey winning at Sonoma. So, those are kind of the guys we’re racing for the Chase spots. Kyle Busch is not out of it. So, we’re up against some tough competition, but we know we have to not make mistakes, and finish these races up front.” MORE NASCAR NEWS
