Do you think NASCAR should penalize Kyle Busch or Brad Keselowski for their incident in the Food City 250 at Bristol Motor Speedway?

Racing In The Rain?
Written by Lindsey Marks

goodyear-tiresAs the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series faces the second consecutive Monday event, due to rain, the idea of racing despite the weather has become the topic of the day.

Think about how many times a year races are delayed for hours or postponed until Monday (or even Tuesday) due to acts of nature. What if the NASCAR stars could just switch tires, add some windshield wipers and hit the asphalt anyway?

NASCAR is constantly trying to add excitement for the fans, hence the implementation of double-file restarts. It seems to me like racing in the rain would certainly add sensationalism to a handful of events throughout the year.

My only concern is the tires. According to NASCAR.com, Goodyear claims they are up to the task.

"If you go back years ago, we did run them in Japan on the Cup cars,” Goodyear spokesman Greg Stucker said. “We're confident we could have a package that would be suitable.”

Despite his fortitude, I am still skeptical because of all the tire issues since the introduction of the COT. However, when the Nationwide race in Montreal was run in the rain last year the Goodyear tires performed quite well.

"We were very happy,” Stucker commented.  “From torrential downpours to puddles and then a little bit of drying condition now and then, I thought the tires performed very well."

In fact, Goodyear tested their latest rain tire at their facility in Texas last November with Juan Pablo Montoya, and reportedly the test went quite well.

If Goodyear can get a good, reliable tire then I truly believe that racing in the rain would be incredibly exciting. Sure, fans would have to sit in the rain for three or four hours during the race but that would be better than sitting in the rain for five or six hours only to go home disappointed and have to come back the next day.

Plus, I bet the on-track excitement would make them forget about the weather.

Picture this, Robby Gordon trying to race for the Lucky Dog position in the rain. That is something I would definitely like to see.
