Tony Stewart is now the winningest NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver at Watkins Glen International.
Coming into this weekend’s event, Stewart was tied with Jeff Gordon for all time wins, with four each, at this historic road course. Stewart has added one more, for a total of five wins on the winding 2.45 mile track.
Stewart’s No. 14 team was worried about running out of fuel at the end but he managed to conserve enough during cautions to make it the entire way. “We were pretty close,” Stewart’s crew chief Darian Grubb said of the fuel level. “He probably didn’t have enough for a burn out or anything.” But, Stewart proved him wrong by doing a nice smoky burnout followed by a couple of donuts before heading to Victory Lane with an even bigger points lead. He is now 249 points over second place Jimmie Johnson. “I love it when it gets slick,” Stewart said of the track. “This is my house right here. We’ve run really well over the last seven or eight years here.”
Marcos Ambrose got a career best finish of second place after winning the Nationwide Series race at The Glen on Saturday with Carl Edwards finishing in third. “The strategy was really good,” Edwards said. “(We) ran out of fuel right at the end of the race so the strategy was perfect… (we) hoped to make it that far, hoped to win but still better than it could have been.” Kyle Busch finished fourth, just in front of Greg Biffle, and was once again disappointed with his top-5 finish. “Wouldn’t turn, wouldn’t lead… wouldn’t anything. I’m tired,” he said. Juan Montoya, Kurt Busch, Max Papis, Clint Bowyer and Denny Hamlin rounded out the top-10. The race had a total of five caution flags and, similar to last year’s late race melee, the red flag flew over The Glen following a huge wreck involving Sam Hornish Jr. Kasey Kahne got loose coming out of the carousel and bumped Hornish off the course and into the tire barrier. Hornish bounced hard off the tires and back onto the racing surface right in the path of Jeff Gordon and many others including Jeff Burton, Andy Lally and Joey Logano. Fortunately, every driver involved left the Infield Care Center without any severe injuries. The next stop in the Sprint Cup Series schedule is at Michigan International Speedway for the CARFAX 400 this coming Sunday, August 16th. MORE NASCAR NEWS
