With a lap time of 38.45 seconds at 187.242 miles per hour, Brian Vickers got his third-consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coors Light pole at Michigan International Speedway. This is also his sixth pole of the season.
Unfortunately, Vickers does not have quite as good of a race day performance history in Michigan as he does on qualifying day. His only top-five finish of 4th came last year, but he also has five other top-10 finishes there. Mark Martin, who won the last race at MIS two months ago, is sitting pretty on the outside pole for the Carfax 400. Earnhardt Ganassi Racing teammates Juan Montoya and Martin Truex Jr. qualified third and fifth, respectively, sandwiching defending Series champion Jimmie Johnson in between them in fourth. Kurt Busch, Ryan Newman, who was fastest in first practice, and Joey Logano finished sixth, seventh and eighth. Awesome Bill Elliott qualified ninth for Sunday’s event. Elliott, who got his second Sprint Cup Series victory at MIS back in 1984, is looking for his 8th win here. The 10th qualifying position went to Kasey Kahne who blew a motor in first practice earlier today. Series points leader Tony Stewart qualified 18th and Jeff Gordon, who aggravated his back injury with that horrendous crash at Watkins Glen last week, qualified 21st. Kyle Busch who is sitting 13th in points and needed a good performance this weekend in order to bump Matt Kenseth out of the bubble spot qualified a dismal 39th, compared to Kenseth’s 25th place qualifying effort. Tony Raines in the Long John Silver’s Dodge was the only driver who failed to qualify. The Carfax 400 is scheduled to broadcast on ESPN at 1pm ET on Sunday. MORE NASCAR NEWS
