The Homestead-Miami Speedway has been bustling with action since early in the morning today. On the opening day of the Ford Championship weekend, the Craftsman Truck Series, Busch Series and Nextel Cup were busy practicing and tuning their cars for the final showdown of the season.
The first to hit the track was the Craftsman Truck Series. Friday would be a hectic day for these teams as they have to practice, make adjustments, qualify and race all in the same day. With all three series at the tack at the same time, the truck series teams got the short end of the stick and were forced to go without a garage over their heads. Each practice session so far has had its share of problems. Brendan Gaughan caught the wall in his No. 77 South Point Chevrolet in CTS practice, Clint Bowyer did the same in his No. 2 BB&T Busch Series car and Kurt Busch brushed the wall in the same spot off Turn 4 in his No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge in Cup practice. Each team was able to work on their machines and mold them to their proper form. The attention this weekend is focused in two main areas. First comes the tight points battle between Mike Skinner and Ron Hornaday in the Craftsman Truck Series. Skinner leads Hornaday by only 29 points, and the two seem to find each other everywhere they go. Of course the main focus of the weekend is on the battle for the Nextel Cup. Teammates Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon are separated by 86 points and neither look to give anything up in the last race of the season. Be sure to tune into all the action this weekend on SPEED, ESPN2, ABC and of course don't forget you can always listen in to MRN on your radio dial.
