Michigan International Speedway is currently in the process of redesigning its infield.
To assist in the demolition of the current buildings, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Jeff Burton used some equipment from his sponsor Caterpillar (CAT) to tear down the old suite building at MIS. “I’ve had very few opportunities to operate a piece of CAT equipment and that was sure a lot of fun,” Burton said. “I can’t say enough for MIS and other racetracks in NASCAR who do such a wonderful job of continuing to invest money into their facilities to make them the best possible venues for our loyal NASCAR fans.”
Burton engaged in his first demolition project in front of MIS suite holders, CAT employees and MIS fans. Even with CAT as a sponsor, Burton does not have previous experience with the heavy-duty equipment. “It’s not as easy as it looks that’s for sure,” he said. “After a little practice I was getting the hang of it. I enjoyed it.” The $17 million dollar project includes a new two-story suite/media center building as well as pit road and fire lane modifications, expansion of the pedestrian tunnel and the garage area fueling station will be moved. In all, MIS will have spent more than $55 million since 2005 on various capital improvement projects that will give race teams and fans a better experience at the facility. MORE NASCAR NEWS
